May Weather in Nice

In May, the temperatures are getting warmer and warmer as summer looms close. A springtime visit allows you to avoid the oppressive Mediterranean heat of summer, with daytime highs sitting comfortably around 68°F (20°C). However, the sun can feel strong in the French Riviera; a sunny day in the high 60’s F might feel more like mid-70’s F.

This weather is very comfortable for wandering nearby villages or doing a walking tour, so there is no excuse to stay indoors! I did not even pack a jacket for my May visit and did just fine wearing a love-sleeve denim button-up shirt if I needed to cover my arms.

Nighttime temperatures are somewhat chilly, reaching about 57°F (13.9°C) overnight. Travelers from exceptionally warm climates might feel cold, while those from countries with harsh winters might be perfectly comfortable in the evening. As an American from the Midwest (Ohio), I fell into the latter category.

With about 1.6 average inches of rain, you’re likely to encounter at least one rainy day during a 7-day trip. However, Nice gets over 300 sunny days a year, so you’ll probably overall stay pretty dry.

Crowdedness Level of a May Visit

I must admit there is a certain energy to visiting Nice in May, with an anticipatory feeling of summer’s approach building throughout the month. Early May may still feel somewhat relaxed, but Nice will be buzzing by the last week in time for the arrival of the Monaco Grand Prix.

You can expect hotel prices to reflect this timeline – they will definitely increase throughout the month. Rooms will also book up, so I recommend booking your Nice hotel 4-6 months in advance at the very least, if possible.

With this approach into the peak tourist season, trains and buses to major tourist destinations can be full at times. I visited in the third week of May and encountered trains so packed during the afternoon rush hour (around 3pm-5pm) that it was near impossible to even get on. I had particular trouble trying to board in Villefranche-sur-Mer to return to Nice (tons of people get on in Monaco), as well as on the #15 bus to Villefranche-sur-Mer around noon.

Unique May Events in Nice

May is when you’ll find the two most exciting events that descend upon the French Riviera each year. While neither is actually in Nice, each only requires simple train ride (unless you have a yacht…).

Formula 1 fans shouldn’t hesitate to visit Monte Carlo to at least see the roads all set up for the Monaco Grand Prix. If you are willing to pay the hefty price tag for tickets, you can witness the thrilling race in person while cheering on local hometown hero Charles Leclerc.

Another prestigious event in May is the Cannes Film Festival, where the world’s film industry converges. While staying in Nice, you can easily hop over to Cannes to steal a glimpse of the red-carpet glamour from afar and maybe even spot a celebrity in the wild. Unfortunately, only accredited film industry professionals can attend the event itself.

Where to Stay During May in Nice

During my initial May trip to Nice, I stayed at the Best Western Hôtel Lakmi Nice. I was traveling solo and didn’t require much space, so I kept my lodging on a budget.

Actually, I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the Best Western hotels are in Nice. My room was small, but had a charming balcony and a lovely complimentary breakfast was served each morning. Plus, it was nice to be located an easy walk from both the tram and train stations.

How to Pack for Nice in May

Towards the beginning of May, you may want to pack layers like a light jacket or scarf in case you encounter any lingering chilly days. You can refer to this packing list I created from my October trip (similar weather) for an idea of what to bring.

However, I must admit that for my late-May trip, I packed quite light. I wore almost all short-sleeved shirts and almost never needed my long-sleeve button-up shirt for arm coverage. I did bring ankle-length linen pants and a pair of jeans and did not really wear shorts during my stay.

Late May brings the first swimming days in Nice (although the water is still cold), so have a swimsuit on-hand in case the perfect beach day arises. Also, a hat can help protect your face from the sun’s strong rays. You will see everybody and their brother donning stylish Panama hats everywhere you go.
