Even after months of living in Nice, getting to wake up here every day still feels like a dream.

The Mediterranean Sea, the always sunny weather, the wonderful people, and the endless day trips and adventures around the city make life always exciting and new here. From the stunning beaches to the colorful markets, there is no shortage of things to do and explore.

However, with all its benefits, there are also some drawbacks to living in Nice.

For example, it can be quite expensive due to the high demand for housing and other amenities like groceries and entertainment. Additionally, in the summertime, the city can become quite overcrowded with tourists which can make it difficult to get around and enjoy the city in its true form.

Overall, moving to the South of France has been a wonderful experience for me and I wouldn’t trade my time here for anything else.

There are so many things that make this city special and unique, making it an amazing place to live and explore.

In this guide, we will go over some of the pros and cons of living in Nice (and the French Riviera in general) so that you can come to your conclusions.

Pros and Cons of Living in Nice, France

Here are, without further ado, the positive and not-so-positive sides of life in Nice.

Pro: Living by the Mediterranean Sea

In case you are wondering if the beauty of the Mediterranean Sea ever gets old – it does not.

The turquoise waters that provide you with a stunning view and the opportunity to spend your days swimming and sunbathing will never cease to amaze you.

Con: The city gets VERY crowded in summer

I would say that for me, this is the biggest con.

Nice is extremely popular among tourists, especially in the summer. Although this can provide you with a lot of fun and cultural experiences, it can also make it difficult to travel around town due to the immense amount of people that visit the city during peak tourist season.

Picture crowded trains, restaurants, beaches, and lines everywhere… Not so nice.

Pro: Great weather year-round

One of the best things about living in the South of France is obviously the great weather.

You can expect mild winters, warm springs, and hot summers – perfect for enjoying outdoor activities all year round.

Con: High cost of living

Due to its popularity and appeal, Nice has some high costs associated with it.

This includes rent prices as well as other amenities like groceries and entertainment which can be more expensive than in other cities in France.

Pro: Great international airport

The Nice Cote d’Azur International Airport is a great asset for those living in the city.

It provides many connections to other parts of France, Europe, and beyond. This makes it easy to explore other cities or countries if you are looking for a change of scenery.

Pro: The public transportation system is very good

The tram & bus system works well around here. You can even get the tram from the city center to the airport in less than 30 minutes!

Con: Driving can be unpredictable

Although public transportation is quite good in Nice, driving your car can sometimes be tricky.

The streets tend to be very narrow and traffic can become congested during peak hours. Therefore, it is best to plan your trips accordingly or opt for alternate modes of transportation when possible – people here are very into scooters, for example.

Pro: Ski resorts and hiking trails nearby

Beautiful winter views on the way

For those who love outdoor activities, Nice has some great options for skiing and hiking

The nearby ski resorts like Isola and Auron offer a wide range of trails for all levels and you can also explore the many hiking trails in nearby towns and villages (the Nietzsche Path to Èze, for example).

Con: Very few nightlife options

Although there are some nice bars and restaurants in Nice, the city is generally not known for its nightlife.

If you are looking for a vibrant nightlife scene with clubs and music venues, then this may not be the best option for you – although I’ve been told that Monaco and Cannes have good options.

Pro: Many day trips and activities

Monaco

My favorite thing about life in Nice is all the incredible day trips you can do around it.

Some of my favorites include St-Paul de Vence, Menton, Èze, Cannes, Monaco, Antibes, and even Sanremo, in Italy.

Also, there is plenty to do in the city as well, with great parks, beaches, and museums.

Con/Pro: The city’s economy revolves mostly around tourism

Since Nice is such a popular destination for tourists, its economy revolves mostly around catering to their needs.

This means that depending on what you do for work, there may not be many job opportunities for those looking for long-term employment.

Pro: Italy is right around the corner!

One of the best things about living in Nice is its close proximity to Italy.

You can hop on a train and be in Italy in less than an hour, giving you access to some amazing Italian cities, culture, cuisine, and more (I have French friends that literally go there every month just to buy cigarettes).

Pro: It’s always sunny. Really.

Finally, you can always count on Nice for sunshine. The city has around 300 days of sun per year, making it the perfect place to get your daily dose of Vitamin D!

Con: People are always moving in and out

Nice is a very transient city with people coming and going all the time. This can make it difficult to form lasting relationships, as many of your friends may move away suddenly.

Pro: Nice is safe

Although it’s not flawless, Nice has low rates of violent crime and I feel very safe here, even walking home at night.

That might change depending on the area of town you are staying atm of course, but most central areas are fine.

Pro: It’s very easy to make friends

Since Nice is so popular among tourists, it’s easy to make friends from all over the world.

From beachside bars to student organizations, there are plenty of opportunities to meet new people and form lasting friendships.

Pro: The food is wonderful

Lastly, the food in Nice is delicious.

You can find a wide variety of restaurants and cafes offering traditional French cuisine as well as Italian and even Mediterranean dishes.

That’s a wrap! As you can probably tell, I am a little biased and absolutely love living here. In my opinion, there are way more pros than cons when it comes to living in Nice.

From its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and wonderful food to the blue skies and nearby ski resorts, there is something for everyone in this city. So if you’re considering making a move to Nice, I say go for it! You won’t regret it.
